Basketball Excellence Journey
Stan Waterman is a distinguished figure in Delaware basketball, renowned for his extensive coaching career and contributions to youth development. Serving as the Head Basketball Coach at Sanford School (1991–2021): Over three decades, Waterman led the boys' basketball team to eight state championships (1992, 2002, 2010–2012, 2016, 2019, and 2021), establishing Sanford as a powerhouse in Delaware high school basketball.
At Delaware State University (2021–Present) Appointed as head coach in 2021, Waterman has been instrumental in revitalizing the Hornets. By his third season, he guided the team to a 15-win record and a berth in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference (MEAC) championship game, earning an invitation to the College Basketball Invitational Tournament. In the 2024-25 campaign at DSU, he has already set a record for the most wins in a season and is a finalist for the Skip Prosser Man of The Year Award.
In addition to his coaching roles, Waterman has been actively involved in youth basketball camps, focusing on skill development, sportsmanship, and personal growth.
Waterman has also served as a member of the prestigious USA Basketball coaching staff. He was an assistant coach on the gold-medal-winning 2018 USA Men’s U17 World Cup Team and the 2017 USA Men’s U16 national team. Waterman was an assistant coach for the 2020 Nike Hoop Summit Team (which did not compete due to the pandemic) and was also an assistant coach for the 2019 USA Nike Hoop Summit team that defeated the World Select team in Portland, Oregon. Waterman also played Division I basketball at the University of Delaware.
Waterman's dedication to basketball extends beyond coaching, reflecting a deep commitment to fostering athletic and personal excellence among youth.
